I did my 'walking' for exercise. That's our old camping trailer on
the meadow. Linefork, KY
The cows we had to walk past at the
foot of our hill. The road winding uphill on the right side of the
picture is out driveway. It was half a mile up to our house.

This is a view from above our house
looking down the holler. The small building in the middle of the
picture is a shed on the meadow. Our house is slightly above and to
the left, with a gray roof. Linefork, KY
About a quarter mile below our house
was the ruins of an old homestead. All that was left were foundation
stones and this fireplace and chimney. Linefork, KY
Our first trip to the ocean.
Wilmington, NC, August 1996.

Timmy at our campsite on Isle of Palms,
near Charlestown, SC. That's the smaller tent we all slept in until
we replaced it with a bigger tent in August 1998. This was earlier
that summer. The one-burner propane stove on the ground between the
picnic table and tent is what we cooked our camp meals on.

A trail ride near Mt. Rushmore, SD.
The guide was a young man named Kyle. Behind him was Barbara, Timmy,
Tristan, and Emily, and I was last.
Camped on a back road in the Black
Hills of South Dakota. We just drove up a forest service road until
we found a nice place to set up a tent. This is the new tent we
bought in August 1998 on our way to South Dakota. Emily is next to
the car and Barbara is between the car and tent.

Barbara, Tristan, and Timmy in the
churchyard at Linefork Baptist Mission. Emily would have ridden on
my bicycle in the child seat. She and Barbara's bicycle must have
both been out of sight when I took the picture. I'm guessing this is
the summer of 97, just by some of the things in the picture.

Martin's Fork Lake, south of Harlan,
Kentucky. This was one of our favorite places to swim. The water
was warm and clear, and the white sand was fun to play in. Barbara,
Tristan, Timmy, Becky, and Emily. That's Tristan's backpack laying
on the beach.
Looking down from our house at the head
of the holler. The motorhome is the one my parents gave us. My old
camping trailer, off to the left, went to my brother and his wife.

church yard after we moved it down there. Fall 1999. Linefork, KY.

the kids for Halloween. Becky, Tristan, Barbara, Timmy, Emily.

'driveway' to the holler to go “Trick or Treating”. October

Linefork Baptist Mission, from the
parking lot. Timmy by the building, Tristan and Emily out on the
hill. That's our Jeep Cherokee between the church and the
outbuildings. The main entrance of the church was the back door,
facing my car. It opened into the kitchen, and the church room was
the front part of the building, which used to be a house. The small
building on the other side of my car is the clothing shed where the
kids played dress-up sometimes. Summer 1999. Linefork, KY.

So glad to see your new book out - and the pictures here are so nice. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteSusan - I finished the book and liked it so much. Really got a feel for the day to life you have lived. It took faith to just take life a moment at a time. I too was a single mom - only had one child though and lived a different life but I homeschooled and could really relate......Thanks again. I'll keep an eye on your blog.
